What is Horsepower?
Horsepower is a unit of measurement that quantifies power, or the rate at which work is done. In automotive terms, it represents the engine’s ability to do work over time. One horsepower is equivalent to 550 foot-pounds per second or 745.7 watts.
What is Torque?
Torque is a measure of the engine’s twisting force. It represents the engine’s ability to perform work, particularly at lower RPMs. Torque is what gets a vehicle moving from a standstill and helps with acceleration and towing capacity.
What is RPM?
RPM stands for Revolutions Per Minute and measures how fast the engine’s crankshaft is rotating. Higher RPM generally means more power, but also more fuel consumption and engine wear. Most engines have an optimal RPM range for maximum efficiency.
The Relationship
Horsepower and torque are related through the formula: HP = (Torque × RPM) ÷ 5252. At 5252 RPM, horsepower and torque are always equal. Below this point, torque is higher than horsepower; above it, horsepower is higher than torque.
