Understanding Statistical Measures
Mean (Average)
The mean is the sum of all values divided by the number of values. It’s the most common measure of central tendency.
Where Σx is the sum of all values and n is the number of values.
Median
The median is the middle value when all values are arranged in order. If there’s an even number of values, it’s the average of the two middle values.
The median is less affected by outliers than the mean.
Mode
The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set. A data set can have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode at all.
The mode is useful for categorical data and discrete numerical data.
Range
The range is the difference between the highest and lowest values in a data set. It measures the spread or dispersion of the data.
The range is sensitive to outliers and doesn’t use all values in the data set.
