Frequently Asked Questions
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a numerical representation of a student’s academic performance. It’s calculated by dividing the total grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted. Each letter grade corresponds to a specific number of grade points (e.g., A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 on a 4.0 scale). Our calculator allows you to input your courses, credits, and grades to automatically calculate your GPA.
Our GPA calculator supports multiple grading scales including 4.0, 5.0, 10.0, and 12.0 scales. You can select your preferred scale at the top of the calculator. The 4.0 scale is most commonly used in the United States, while other scales may be used in different countries or educational systems.
To calculate your cumulative GPA, add all your courses from different semesters or terms. Enter each course with its credit hours and the grade you received. The calculator will automatically compute your total grade points and divide by your total credit hours to determine your cumulative GPA across all courses.
Unweighted GPA uses a standard scale where an A in any course is worth 4.0 points. Weighted GPA gives additional points for more difficult courses like AP, IB, or honors classes. For example, an A in an AP course might be worth 5.0 points instead of 4.0. This calculator currently calculates unweighted GPA, but you can adjust the grading scale to match your school’s system.
To improve your GPA, focus on earning higher grades in your courses. Since GPA is calculated based on both grades and credit hours, performing well in courses with more credit hours will have a greater impact on your overall GPA. Other strategies include retaking courses you didn’t do well in (if your school allows grade replacement), seeking help from professors or tutors, and developing better study habits.
