About Scientific Notation
What is Scientific Notation?
Scientific notation is a way of expressing numbers that are too large or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form. It is commonly used by scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.
In scientific notation, a number is written as the product of two numbers:
a × 10ⁿ
Where a is a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10, and n is an integer.
Why Use Scientific Notation?
- Simplifies writing very large or very small numbers
- Makes calculations with extreme values more manageable
- Standardizes the representation of measurements
- Reduces errors in counting zeros
- Makes it easier to compare the magnitude of numbers
How to Convert to Scientific Notation
For large numbers:
- Move the decimal point to the left until you have a number between 1 and 10
- Count how many places you moved the decimal point
- The number of places becomes the positive exponent
For small numbers:
- Move the decimal point to the right until you have a number between 1 and 10
- Count how many places you moved the decimal point
- The number of places becomes the negative exponent
