About Wind Chill
Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air. The wind chill temperature is always lower than the actual air temperature for values above the threshold temperature of approximately 10°C (50°F).
The wind chill index was developed to describe the relative discomfort/danger resulting from the combination of wind and temperature. It’s important for understanding how quickly exposed skin can develop frostbite in cold, windy conditions.
The formula used in this calculator is the one adopted by the National Weather Service in the United States and Environment Canada:
Wind Chill (°F) = 35.74 + 0.6215×T – 35.75×V^0.16 + 0.4275×T×V^0.16
Where T is the air temperature in Fahrenheit and V is the wind speed in mph.
